Lyrics

Verse 1

He came not with His heav’nly crown, Nor scepter clad with pow’r; His coming was in feebleness, The infant of an hour. A humble manger cradled first The virgin’s holy birth, And lowly creatures welcomed there The Lord of Heav’n and earth.

Verse 2

He came not in His robe of wrath, With arm outstretched to slay; But, on the darkened paths of earth, To pour celestial day, To guide in peace the wand’ring feet, The broken heart to bind; And bear upon the painful cross The sins of human kind.

Verse 3

But at the Last His sign shall be Upon the heav’ns displayed, And earth and its inhabitants, Shall be, indeed, afraid; For not in weakness will He come Nor sins and woes to bear, But gird with all His Father’s might, His judgment to declare.

Verse 4

Yet grant us, Savior! So to pass Our time in trembling here, That when, upon the clouds of heav’n, Your glory shall appear, By power of Your sacrifice In triumph we may rise, And enter, with Your holy host, Your temple in the skies!
